The word of wisdom is revelation (wisdom from the mind of God) supernaturally given by the Holy Spirit to an individual. The word of wisdom speaks to divine revelation that typically speaks to future events, circumstances and/or situations. Most often word of knowledge and word of wisdom work together.
Word of Wisdom is supernatural knowledge applied in a godly or correct way. The difference between the gifts of knowledge and wisdom is small, with much overlap. “Knowledge” assumes a certain degree of understanding of certain information; “wisdom” assumes that plus a little more — the use or applying of that information to achieve certain ends.
It is not knowledge merely, but knowledge and then how to put it into practical use. This gifted person not only understood the truth that God is bringing but can also give supernatural insight (wisdom) in how to fully apply that truth to the circumstance.
A word of knowledge is usually about something in the past and/or present tense. The word of wisdom is generally speaking about present/future.
It is important to note… A word of wisdom is not natural wisdom that people sometimes have or have gained. People who are naturally wise or have gained wisdom from experience, dealings in life or from learning are not operating in words of wisdom. It may be wisdom and smart to listen to, but it’s not supernatural wisdom that comes from God.
Here are a couple ways Words of Knowledge can come…
Dreams
Visions
Inward Revelation
Tongues &Interpretation
Voice of God
Angel
Biblical Examples of Word of Wisdom
Word of Knowledge – Genesis 41:1-7, 15-24 – given to Pharaoh
Joseph speaks to Pharaoh concerning Pharaoh’s dream (word of knowledge) concerning what was about to happen in Egypt. Egypt was about to enter 7 years blessing followed by 7 years famine.
Word of Wisdom – Genesis 41:25-38 – given to Joseph
Joseph not only interprets Pharaoh’s dream but then gives to Pharaoh supernatural wisdom and understanding in how Egypt should handle the coming events. Notice in verse 38 how Pharaoh recognizes the Spirit of God upon Joseph’s life.
Word of Wisdom – Acts 27:9-11 – if they listened to Paul they wouldn’t have lost the ship and all their merchandise
Paul gives a warning concerning trouble the ship would come into if they were to set sail at that time. The shipmaster and the centurion fail to listen to wisdom Paul gives them and further in the chapter we see the ship getting into the very trouble Paul warned them about.
Word of Knowledge and Wisdom – Acts 27:21-32
An angel speaks to Paul and gives him a promise that everyone on the boat will be saved and no one will die. Paul addresses those in the boat and gives them this assurance. Yet in verse 32, Paul gives wisdom and warns the centurion that unless everyone stays with the boat lives will be lost
Words of Wisdom can be Conditional – 2 Kings 20:1-17
The first word comes to Isaiah concerning King Hezekiah and that was to get his house in order for he is about to die. King Hezekiah sought God and there is now a shift to this first word given by God to Isaiah. God now speaks to Isaiah concerning what needs to be done for King Hezekiah’s healing and recovery, as well as the future of the Kingdom...
