The Prophetic Calling of Saint Paul

Saint Paul was a gifted exegete and a prophet. A man of many talents, he possessed an intimate knowledge of the Hebrew Scriptures. As such, he used the Law, the prophets, and the psalms when he preached to argue that Jesus was the Messiah.

PROPHETIC CALL THROUGH A VISION

The Prophet Jeremiah's name means Yahweh lifts up, or shoots forth as a bow, establishes or loosens the womb, with the latter meaning alluding to God's forming of man in the womb. "Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee. And before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet to the nations." (Jer 1:5) (c. 640-587 B.C.) Other men God speaks specifically of setting apart from birth are: 1) Samuel i Samuel 1:17-19 2) Samson Judges 13:2-25 3) John the Baptist Luke 1:15-17 4) Jesus Christ Matthew 1:18-25 5) Paul in Galatians 1:15-16

CALLING OF PROPHET

A prophet must be called by God. The initiative in making a prophet always rests with him. It is not a ministry that anyone can take up. Only a false prophet dares to take up this ministry for himself. The true prophetic ministry always begins with a call from God. Isaiah had a very dramatic call (Isaiah 6:1-8). He needed this to sustain him through a difficult and disappointing ministry.
Jeremiah’s calling came in a specific word from God when he was quite young.

The prophets did not inherit the office nor receive it by human appointment, but were chosen, prepared, and called of God: and the call was often soul-searching (Ex. 3:1-4; 1 Sam. 3:1-20; Jer. 1:4-10; Ezek. 1:1-3).
